Of the many aspects of our electoral process that need improvement, the most glaring is Campaigning. While the flush of money is deplorable, I find it inexcusable that no significant information is ever conveyed during a campaign. Thus, if I were King, these are the campaign rules I would impose.

  • A year before the election there would be a test, a hard test, that challenged the knowledge of the candidate in civics and the position they were seeking. The test would not be graded, only made public. If a person missed the test, they would not be allowed to run for office in that election.
  • Then, once a month for nine months the candidates would be required to sit isolated in a room, with independent proctors observing, to answer an essay question. The candidate would not know the question in advance, nor would they have access to computers or aides, and they must answer the question within a specified time frame. The essays would be made public.
  • The month prior to the election, absolutely no campaigning would be allowed at all. No advertising, no whistle stops, no TV appearances,.. et cetera. This month would be known as, “Thinking Time.”There. I fixed it. You’re welcome.

There. I fixed it. You’re welcome.
