“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!” by Sir Walter Scott, from his poem Marmion.

Imagine a person who was set up to appear guilty. A patsy. Not set up to appear entirely guilty, but only guilty enough to arrest them and look into their lives further. Once the authorities look more closely, they see evidence of shenanigans and pursue that route further. What they discover is evidence of a foreign government engaging in acts of terror against this country.

However, the entire thing is a carefully crafted setup, not unlike the Dreyfus Affair, to manufacture justification for starting World War Three.

Now imagine the person figured it out as it was happening and their only options were: to assert their innocence and start World War Three, or to declare their guilt and accept punishment for a crime they never committed.

What would be the right choice?
