Ants, bees, and termites communicate using electro-chemical signals. It is through this communication that they build and maintain their hives and colonies.
We humans are also capable of communicating through electro-chemical signals. From two individuals that find themselves attracted to one another, to the mass frenzy and mob mentality that can take place at stadiums, in theaters, on the streets, and during elections.
The only real difference between how ants and humans communicate electrochemically is that we humans will build mental images from the energy, as a rationalization after the fact, and those images can be influenced and manipulated to control and distort our perception of reality.
Humans need a shared narrative to build a successful community. A narrative that gives everyone in the community similar images to certain electro-chemical experiences. A narrative that is adapted to keep the people in the community working together, protects people from manipulation, and keeps the instinct of destruction and war from spreading in the minds of the populace.
This shared narrative, if our race is to continue growing forward, must put people working together to move civilization forward at the center of the story, while preserving the freedom of people to find their own individual expression. As humans are free willed individuals who are also inextricably part of a greater whole.
