It is easier to change our justifications and rationalizations than it is to change our routines and behavior.

This is why a business person can never stop at a reasonable profit, or why a warring nation will never stop at a certain boundary or amount of territory. People will always come up with an excuse to pursue more and more instead of doing the hard, painful work of confronting their own demons.
