On this day back in 1863, Picket’s Charge took place and marked the end of the Battle of Gettysburg. I spent the morning coffee thinking about the Civil War and the lessons that keep coming back to relearn; albeit in different forms.
The Civil War showed how dangerous political hacks were in real world situations. People who are more interested in appearing like leaders, than actually being leaders. At the beginning of the war every rich snobbish jerk with political aspirations wanted to be a General. Lots of lives were lost as a result. Politicians are always more concerned with their public image than they are with getting a job done or doing the right thing. Being a good leader requires a large amount of humility and self sacrifice.
Today, we suffer from the same problem. Only it is much worse, as it is not just the affluent with political connections lost in delusions of grandeur. It is everyone.
Social Media corrupts the soul of populations.
