By nature, politicians will fight against anything someone else can do to gain influence. This includes any manager trying to achieve a goal. Nothing garners more support from the public than successfully achieving a stated goal. Thus, as politicians spend more and more time and effort sabotaging others instead of trying to get anything accomplished of their own, any society governed solely by politicians will eventually grind itself to oblivion.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to eliminate politicians. They represent a natural aspect of the human psyche. A society that wishes to sustain itself must adapt to manage them. There must be a dedicated group of people whose job it is to manage politicians. This is not limited to the politicians in public office. There are many people who obsess about gaining influence in a wide variety of ways throughout society.
Managing politicians is more than just a job, or a career; it is a lifestyle. The only way to successfully manage politicians is to ensure that their competitive reflexes are never triggered against those who are trying to manage them. Hence, such a priest class must never pursue influence themselves.
All married couples go through a phase of fighting where they must learn that success is attained by working towards an image of family and not fighting for an image of their own individual self.
Similarly, the priest class must fight to maintain an image of a healthy society. This image must not be something achievable, as that would only provoke the politicians, and it must allow for growth and adaptation to survive in an ever changing environment.
