Males are massive and strong. The mere threat of their strength is enough to get them what they want. Thus, females evolved to be more clever, tactical, and social in order to get what they want. It is very easy to oversimplify this relationship.

To the modern gorilla, humans, physical strength is no longer dominant; being smart is. The dynamic is exactly the same, where people who are smart can assert their dominance naturally, while the people who are not smart must use social guile to manipulate an outcome.

Complications arise among the modern gorillas from the fact that females are not adapted to being overtly dominant, and males are not adapted to being tactically social. The females who are smarter repeatedly get pulled into the trap of needing to prove their dominance, while the males who are inferior have trouble navigating the social currents without losing themselves completely.
