Living with a narcissistic psychopath is exhausting. It is constant effort.
When no one is looking the abuse is almost random, but the sword is always overhead.

To respond with anger is to fall into the trap. A no win situation: repress anger and they slowly chip away; express anger and they level neighborhoods with an air of justified arrogance.

The effort to tell others is fruitless. The average person does not want to know,.. they do not want to be responsible. Tell them directly and they dismiss the claims as unfounded and suspicious. Try to be subtle and give them clues to look for and they actively resist understanding.

They just want to visit from time to time, with the usual platitudes and complacency, the pasted on smile of shallow concern, the perfect advice, counting the minutes until they can return to their cars and drive back to the lives they are invested in. Comforted by knowledge that they can say they have fulfilled their duty.

Who can blame them? Evolution has woven the desire to migrate away from our problems into our core behaviors, and the ability to migrate away is the greatest display of wealth and luxury.

The only people attracted to such untenable situations are other psychopaths. Each looking to exploit the chaos in their own favor. The only hope is for those psychopaths to turn on each other and bring an end to everyone’s misery.
