We are all storytellers. Absolute truths are almost impossible to come by, but we still need a sense of context to function in this world.
Philosophers tell intricate and highly detailed stories that aim to be as accurate and truthful as possible in order to benefit everyone. Sophists tell equally intricate and detailed stories, using the same elements as philosophers, with the aim of gaining an advantage for themselves or their cause. An example of such sophistry can be seen in the theory of Eugenics.
It is a common and accurate understanding that genes and DNA play an important role in our lives. All around us we can see evidence of how genes have been manipulated for one reason or another. Whether it be all the varieties of tulips and dogs, or the productivity of cattle and salmon. And most understand that if a person who comes from a short family wants to have taller children, they need to mate with someone from a tall family. But Eugenics uses this basic understanding and spins a tale that bolsters the oligarchs and justifies class warfare against the public. The version the Nazis used told a story of a past “Master Race” that could be regained if the muddy waters of the gene pool were cleansed. Of course, the problem with eugenics is that it actually works against evolution, not to mention freedom and justice.
Life is always evolving to survive the current environment, thus there can be no past Master Race. Those who are alive today are as they should be. And there is no way for us to understand the future well enough to control evolution. As soon as humans stop maintaining them, most of the tulip and dog variations will disappear, along with cattle and farm salmon. Basically, Eugenics is a sophistic story that justifies the effort to make the entire population into slaves that depend on the oligarchs for survival. It is an effort to Manifest a world as they imagine it to exist. A world that needs them to rule over it.
Propaganda is a marketing strategy that uses Freudian psychology to manipulate people emotionally and psychologically. Propaganda cannot exist on its own, it needs a product to sell. The danger of propaganda depends on the product it is selling; like cigarettes, bacon, or vaccines. When the product that is being sold is a sophistic story, the path of history is dramatically altered.
