A society functioning at full swing is like music; whether it be classical, dance, rock & roll, jazz, or the blues… being played by soloists, quartets, choirs, or full orchestras. All of the pieces, and all of the layers playing at their own time, to their own tune, but somehow all synchronized into a world of music… into one grand symphony.
There is no person or AI machine on Earth that can write and conduct this symphony, but they do try over and over again. Each time, no matter how complex and intricate they make of their effort, they can only produce the most rudimentary of tunes for a very short period of time. For a true society is composed of many composers and conductors, each focused on their own ecosystem. The fact that all ecosystems are a part of a single environments is what makes the symphony so harmonious, not the logical effort of humans to make the symphony be harmonious.
We can improve the efficiency of the system, but we can never control and dictate the music being played. That is the lesson that civilization has to learn over and over again. As we advance, developing new technologies and discovering new sciences, our excitement causes us to lose our reasoning to the fantasy that we might now be able to assert total control over the world.
With each inevitable failure we end up embracing the huge complexity of the system, and further fine-tune our perception of a higher power.
