If you were placed in the middle of a vast desert, not able to see anything in any direction, and no knowledge of the geography to determine which direction was best to reach safety, how would you act?

Everyone would pick a direction and start walking, but most would lose heart and change direction at the first experience of discomfort. Some of those people would eventually learn the lesson and stick to a single direction despite any suffering or discomfort. The rest would end up wandering aimlessly, even though they might believe they were being logical. Very, very few would start walking in a single direction and stick to it until they reached safety or died.

This is not a distinction of right or wrong, just an effort to understand who we are in the context of the people around us.
