A seed, a fragment of the crystal desired, is placed into the right environment, with all the right elements, and pressure is applied.

A society descends into fascism because the people are confused, angry, and frustrated. Sometimes the people are confused for natural reasons, and sometimes the people are made confused by intentional misinformation and manipulation. In this state of confusion people are agitated and continuously looking for a way to regain a sense of balance. Then, seemingly out of the blue, a charismatic individual emerges that is seen as the seed a proper society can grow around.

The problem, which is rediscovered over and over again, is that people are not so simple and such leaders are never in complete control.

No matter how careful, how calculating engineers may be, crystals grow according to the nature of the elements and not the nature of the seed or the desires of the engineers.
