A democratic government should act like a computer: the voice of the public is the data being input, the houses of government are the circuits, debate in the halls and chambers is the processing, and policy is the output.
Politics is the art and science of gaining influence over this system naturally. Trying to nudge the data flowing through the system without disrupting or changing the system.
Corruption is disrupting or changing the system in order to manage or stop the flow of data. Where a Senator does not debate in favor of their constituents, but in favor of their “donors”.
Corruption involves so much risk that it is always best to limit corruption to just enough to get the desired results. This leaves a door open for public opinion to occasionally assert itself. As a result, from the perspective of the oligarchs, we see a two steps forward – one step back progression.
Naturally, this becomes a nuisance to the plans of the oligarchs. To move forward more efficiently it is necessary to alter and control the data being input; to control public opinion. As a result, our schools were undermined, first the news media then entertainment media was bought and brought to heel, and now social media is being managed.
In social media, we are currently witnessing this effort evolve from a brute force wave of propaganda to a more subtle, technologically nuanced game of divide and conquer. The reason for this change is because the environment has changed. Brute force propaganda is no longer needed as the public is no longer connected to the governing system at all.
The goal now, in this new environment, is not to convince people of what is right, but to hide the fact that their voice is no longer connected to the system of governance. Even though a person does not know anyone who supports a given policy, they are made to believe that the supporters of that policy exist in such numbers as to have dominance in the processing of policy.
This goal is achieved by infusing the public with hatred and blame, so they firmly believe that it is the “other side” that is guilty of pursuing the policies that, in reality, no one likes.
