Science is becoming its own religion. Many have seen this happening for some time. There is no way to stop it and, in general, I believe it to be a good and necessary thing.
Considering the big picture, at the societal level over generations, the practice and use of science and technology has thus far been undisciplined and unfocused. The main driving force behind science has always been capitalism. Capitalism is not aware of the past or the future, nor does it care about identity or integrity. Humanity is still a small child and science and technology are simply new shiny toys.
Over the past two years we have witnessed the truth; that the natural process of science evolving into a religion has been hijacked by people who clearly believe that the sole purpose of religion is to manipulate and control people.
It is true that throughout history there has been at least one religion, in one form or another, being used to control people. Sometimes it might seem necessary to keep people in hand while things that they cannot understand or control happen around them. But unfortunately, it is mostly just people who use an established religion as a weapon in an effort to build the world in their own image.
A Good and healthy religion is about building communities of willing participants. I define religion as a formula of rites, rituals, mores, and norms that have evolved, or been designed to build and maintain a community around an ideal, concept, and/or objective.
Today’s oligarchs, these new corporate “adepts” of science and technology, are trying to force their faith onto unwilling people with the same fervor and fanaticism as The Inquisition. And I fear, as many do, that it will only get worse.
The greatest challenge that faces humanity moving forward, is allowing communities to evolve in different directions, that will lead, over time, to our species being divided. Heretofore, humanity has exterminated all previous competitors; Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon are the examples we know of. Our modern history is certainly full of horrible efforts to exterminate people who are different. There can be no doubt that it is this innate desire for a single homogenous human species without competitors that drives jingoism, racism, and religious fanaticism.
It is natural for individuals to adapt to their own environments, and individuals of the same species who are in two different environments will naturally evolve into two different species. Especially as we descend into famine. During the feast we can explore the world and the universe, but during the famine we must keep our focus on our own lot and adapt as necessary. Thus, people in Tahiti will evolve differently than people in Calgary. To fight against this, is to fight against the survival of our legacy… if not our species… As our species, as we know it, was never meant to remain the same forever.
Everyone has their own path, guided by their passion, to the awareness that our consciousness extends beyond our physical/material form. Transhumanism is a path for those who have not yet been able to learn this in any other way. Hopefully they do not need to destroy the world in order to achieve this.
