Humans are a political species. Everything we do is about gaining influence and asserting dominance. Whether it is something tiny like which side of the vanity the tube of toothpaste should be kept, or something large like who should be in control of the budget and how money is invested. In many intricate forms, and dynamic webs of interwoven interests, these battles never end.

In these constant battles we have developed two strategies: the Fortress and the Sword. The Fortress is to be withdrawn, stubborn and distant, arms folded across the chest or quietly reading a newspaper. A Sword is a critical attack, whether it be sincere or fabricated. Each can be subtle or overt, each can be nuanced or simple, each can be used offensively and defensively, and they can be used together to create a very dynamic battle strategy. For example, a person can use a new pronoun as a fortress, then attack others with swords of criticism for not abiding their dominance.

All healthy interaction begins with the people involved testing and understanding the social boundaries of the others present. Then, from there, a very careful and systematic process of sharing information. Slowly becoming more comfortable with the rules of the engagement. People who think they should be able to speak quickly and freely without taking the time to assimilate are walking into a trap.

To survive and prosper in this world, a person needs to be practiced and skilled in the political arts.
