Imagination came first. It is the Tao,.. with yin and yang. It is the light God created, that Satan turned against man. It is the flood Noah survived. It is the wilderness Gilgamesh tamed and allowed civilization to flourish.

Within our imagination we create logic. Logic is a disciplined, focused effort to build structures within our imagination. Those structures, like any house, give us comfort when they are strong and sound. This is why we get angry when we see a movie that doesn’t make any sense… Logic doesn’t need to be true, or real, it just needs to have a good structure and fit into the broader context of whatever it is we are looking at.

Science is a tool, no different from a hammer, we use to build logical structures. Let’s say I have a guy come over, a carpenter, to do some work on my house. I go to check on his progress only to find nothing he is doing makes sense to me. I ask him about it and he gives a dismissive curt response, “You just need to trust hammer.” Of course, like anyone, I would toss the jerk out of my house.

Our skill at using these things, imagination, logic, and science, is less important than our intentions for using them. A serial killer might operate a hammer much the same way a carpenter does,.. firmly held in hand, strong swings hinged at the elbow, and perfect aim,.. but with very different intent.

Logic is a function of imagination, and science is just another one of its tools.
