Just as a male Manakin woos a mate,
Hemingway’s selfish, masculine exuberance was crafted,
in its environment, to attract a specific type of woman.
A woman who could evoke a particular
frequency of love in him.
It was that exact frequency of love
that fueled his creative fire.
Nothing was more important than that fire,
no one and no thing,.. not even his own life.
An ancient hunter trying to survive a cold dark winter.
All artists use a different frequency of emotion
to fuel their creative fires.
Each one crafts an elaborate life around
the acquisition of that one specific emotion.
Everyone else enjoys the entire spectrum of emotional energy.
We learn to use them all, when needed,
and even evolve through them as we grow older:
We start a relationship with one specific frequency of love,
and maintain the relationship with a variety of others.
All great artists live their lives completely dedicated to,
and consumed by, a single emotion that society needed
to be expressed and examined at that moment.
We must be careful to not let psychologists,
in their own selfish exuberance,
destroy art by “saving” artists.
