The most primitive way life gets what it wants, in which men reign supreme, is to threaten violence. The most primitive unique way women get what they want is to promise sex. There is too much risk to actually get in a fight or have sex, thus it is most beneficial to only threaten or promise. A delicate and dangerous game considering a women must promise sex without provoking violence.

As a result, both sides have developed many strategies in this effort; from wildly hard and overt to very soft and subtle. These strategies have become deeply ingrained into our behaviors and cultures. As time goes by, civilization evolves and people adapt, these behaviors become more and more anachronistic. As we grow and evolve we slowly become aware of these unnecessary behaviors because we experience them as being out of context.

On the spectrum that goes from wildly hard and overt to very soft and subtle, we are not even half way in our evolving awareness of our own behaviors.
