The hard cold truth about evolution is that it is far too complicated, and happens far too slowly for us to see in real time. We can only see it and understand it after the fact. When we can compress it down enough for our brains to comprehend. (Thus the popular sci-fi trope of rapid and highly specific gentic mutations or technological advances creating super heroes.)
For thousands of years it had always been best to ignore the indiscretions and corruptions of others. As challenging others could get a person killed, and overall there never was much threat to humanity anyway. Thus, the behavior of keeping our eyes down and our noses in our own business had become hard wired into our psyche. So much so, it is a cornerstone of the major religions.
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, however, the ingrained behavior of ignoring those same indiscretions and corruptions has led to the possibility of our extinction.
