In terms of evolution, open democracy is a self-destructive and inefficient institution. It wastes far too much time and energy trying to change the minds of the stubborn, stupid, and irresponsible. To the point where it becomes politically beneficial to be stubborn, stupid, and/or irresponsible.

If we are so smart, why do we spend all of our time arguing with stupid people?

Because emotionalism makes people myopic.

The self-esteem trap to avoid is when a person asks for our advice or opinion, then tries to pull us into an argument to change our mind. Some people are very clever about how they accomplish this.

Insecure people have no personality, and will attack those who do have personality.

An insecure person who wants to be seen as smart, and is smart, becomes passive aggressive.

An insecure person who wants to be seen as smart, but is not smart, becomes covertly aggressive.
